In the image above titled “The Bowdoin, Monhegan Island,” Edward Willis Redfield captures the feel of a beautiful summer afternoon through his brushwork and colors that convey the sparkling light and breezy atmosphere of the day, The famed eighty-eight foot schooner, ‘The Bowdoin’, is moored just outside of the natural harbor formed by Monhegan and Manana Island. Built in 1921, in East Boothbay, the Bowdoin was the official sailing vessel and a great symbol of strength for the citizenry, as she was constructed to withstand the perils of Artic exploration.
